On Sunday September 21 your oldtimer would love to be taken out of the garage for a ride towards Alblasserwaard! This time our GCCC members Paul and Pieter Onno have organised a varied and pleasant ride in low lying polder landcape with your GCCC friends.
You are expected to arrive at the Kat in de Wilg restaurant, Peperstraat 28, 2969 AZ Oud-Alblas between 12:00 and 12:30 h. dry where you will be received with coffee and pastry.
What will you see?
From Alblasserwaard, land between the rivers Lek and Merwede we’ll drive along the meandering river Alblas, passing authentic Dutch farms. Past Fort Altena, one of the 46 fortifications belonging to the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Around Altena on that day there happens to be the Liniepadfestival. Then we continue past the Biesbosch water reservoirs which can be spotted from a vantage point.
Water is given space in new nature
Nature in the making: the roads you will be on have been raised, because dry polder land is being turned into water in order to prevent the main rivers from flooding. You can also visit the Biesbosch MuseumEiland (€ 3,75 charge, free with Museumjaarkaart).
Then we’re heading for Dordrecht, strategically placed on the crossroads of navigable rivers and having a direct connection with the sea.
After that we’lll take the ferry to the Eiland van Dordrecht. € 2,50 charge per car with driver plus € 0,80 per extra passager. At the other end of the island there is a bridge.
Anything to be won?
There will be only one question which may result in a bottle of authentic wine, but you have to pay attention!
A large party of the ride runs through an area where people rigidly stick to the no-work-on-Sunday principle. Filling up your car is impossble there on a Sunday. So make sure your tank is full when you leave! As for pubs, the organisers have found a couple. Worth a visit in Dordrecht is Villa Augustus, where you can eat from their organic garden!
And after the ride?
The ride finishes at around 5 p.m. at the same place where you started. You can stay for a three course dinner costing € 25,00. There is a choice in the menu:
Starters:
– Mustard soup ór
– Tomato soup ór
– Vegetarian soup
Main courses:
– Porkmedallions ór
– Beefsteak ór
– Fillet of Salmon ór
– Wrap (vegetarian)
Dessert:
Banana split
Can I take the dog?
Yes, buit dogs are not allowed in the restaurant where we start and finish. The name of the restaurant ‘Kat in de Wilg’, meaning Cat in the Willow, says it all! That place is cats’ domain!
And the price?
Taking part costs € 4,- for members and € 7,- for guests. Included are coffee/tea and pastry. So entry fees to the museum, ferrry ticket and dinner are not included.
How to register?
Registering for this ride is no longer possible.
