On Sunday, September 28th, we’ll be taking a truly varied tour through the land of Thom’s youth: Kennemerland, around Haarlem. Country estates play a key role in this trip.
We’re expected from 11:00 am at a restaurant in Vogelenzang, where we’ll be welcomed with coffee/tea and pastries.
An impression:
The tour starts at 12:00 pm and will take us along the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes via Bentveld to the Zandvoort aan Zee Boulevard, with its many inviting beach pavilions.
Then we ‘ll take the sea road, traditionally the most beautiful provincial road, straight through the widest dune area.
We’ll now arrive in what’s known as Lustwarande, the source of the purest beer and home to numerous estates with palaces and castles. In the photo below, for example, you can see Elswout’s model farm with its matching classic car. Discover and photograph the castle yourself!
We’ll “climb” our cars to the highest dune in the Netherlands, complete with a fantastic viewing tower. As children, we used to thunder down it on our soapboxes.
We’ll delve into history with Brederode Ruins, passing the largest and most impressive house in the Netherlands on the Duin en Kruidberg estate. After passing fairytale estates, we’ll take the ferry to the North Sea Canal locks, skirting it south, and arrive in the eerie area of Tata Steel. The northernmost point is Assumburg Castle with its French Gardens, open to the public and with a terrace for refreshments.
Then we’ll enter emptiness and drive across the former bed of the IJ River. Pictured below with Ma Deuche. We’ll drive through the longest ribbon village in the Netherlands to Thom’s birthplace, Spaarndam.
Spaarndam is situated on a narrow dike between the Spaarne River and what remains of the IJ River. Hansje Brinkers, who prevented a flood, has been given a statue.
We experience another contrast as we drive along the Spaarne River into the cheerful city of Haarlem, with its many city castles, cultural events, and terraces.
We leave Haarlem, passing Louis Napoleon’s most beautiful palace, and ride along the dike of the Haarlemmermeerpolder. After 3:30 pm, we ‘ll settle back down at De Vogelensangh for drinks and a chat. Those who wish can choose to stay for dinner. At 6:00 pm, a three-course menu of your choice will be served.
In short, a varied ride with many sights in one of the most diverse landscapes in the Netherlands. With plenty of room to create your own itinerary based on your interests. You can use an extensive list of recommendations.
