Asparagus Ride

Spring has arrived, and along with it comes the tastiest of all vegetables (at least, in my opinion): asparagus. So, not entirely unexpectedly, that is the goal of this ride. We are also taking this opportunity to venture into Belgium once again with our cars. The start is on Sunday, April 26, around 12:30 PM somewhere in Walsoorden, where we will enjoy a ‘bolus’ and a cup of coffee.

Getting there can be a challenge, for the following reasons: If you come down to Antwerp via the E19 to drive back into the Netherlands, part of the route will be through the Port of Antwerp, not exactly the most beautiful part of Belgium. If you come via the Westerschelde tunnel (toll-free, admittedly), the route is much more scenic but slightly longer. And as soon as you are near the starting point, you will come across the brand-new Waterzande housing development, which is not on the map and through which you cannot drive (In that case, follow the arrow with the name of the restaurant/café). We know that all our members are resourceful enough to find their way, even without digital aids.

Right after we’ve finished our coffee and bolus, we’ll head towards Doel around 1:30 PM. This polder village became a ghost town when it was decided that it had to disappear for the expansion of the Port of Antwerp. A decision that was reversed 30 years later, when the village had already been almost completely stripped of its inhabitants. A somewhat sad, but very photogenic spot.

Afterwards, we drive further into Belgium to ride through and along the polders. The roads are narrow, and on a sunny day, we will encounter many walkers and cyclists. There is plenty of time for a stop and a drink (we have marked those places in the route book). However, we shouldn’t make it too elaborate, at least if you decide to stay for dinner. We drive back into the Netherlands to finish in Zuiddorpe. There, we will dine and enjoy the asparagus menu, consisting of asparagus soup to start and Asparagus à la Zuiddorpe style to follow.

What does this dinner look like?

Starter

Cream of asparagus soup

Main course

Asparagus Zuiddorp style

How much does it cost?

The price for the ride including coffee and cake (but excluding drinks and dinner) is € 10 p.p. for members and € 13 p.p. for guests. Dinner is € 45 p.p.

And our four-legged friends?
Your loyal companion is also welcome, provided it well-behaved and on a leash.

Registration
You can register via the registration page no later than Sunday, April 19. This ride has been registered under the event regulations.

When registering, you can now also indicate whether you want to ride along with someone or if someone can ride with you. If you choose this option, you agree that your contact details will be shared with other solo riders or drivers, so that you can arrange to ride together in advance.

PLEASE NOTE! We will not be returning to Bar Goed in Walsoorden. Therefore, this ride does not have the same starting and ending point. Finding a companion will require prior arrangement.

We hope you will turn up in large numbers, as we think this will be a very fun day trip.
